We love raising pigs, particularly heritage breeds like Red Wattle and Duroc.
We integrate our hogs into our flower gardens by allowing them to till the ground cover, eat bugs and weeds, and fertilize the soil beneath.
In 2020, we decided to create a mandala garden from a patch of lawn next to our house. To start, we fenced in the 100’ x 75’ space and released 6 piglets into it to tear up all the grass and weeds. Next, we used string and measuring tape to establish the center of the mandala and to mark out each concentric circle. Next, we dug the paths out by shovel, adding the scooped soil to the tops of each circular bed to make them raised. Once the beds were established, we laid out drip irrigation in all of them. Then came the fun part: planting! We interplanted vegetables and flowers to create a beautiful yet functional garden. Different iterations have emerged through the years, and our goal now—in 2025—is to fill the mandala garden with (mostly) perennials to limit soil disturbance.
At Table Bluff Farm, we place the planet before profits. Our small-scale, regenerative, holistic integrative system is based on rotational grazing of our pigs and chickens to cultivate our cut flower and mixed vegetable market gardens.
We incorporate:
• permaculture principles, such as edible hedges and polycultures
• no-till management (i.e., we don’t use tractors or rototillers)
• pollinator & wildlife habitats within hedgerows
• cover crop for nitrogen fixing and carbon sequestration
• organic integrated pest management (IPM)
• non-GMO feed & seed
• NRCS grants for soil & water conservation
• Kiss the Ground grant for building & maintaining healthy soil
The Fortuna Pumpkin Patch will be back this year (2025)! Stay tuned for upcoming announcements!
